This is a class that will teach me about bass guitar techniques and how to improve with the littlest of things such as where I pick or what pick to use. To me it sounded a bit weird at first but it really does make a difference to your sound.
This class will mostly focus on all aspects of solo performance techniques with regular solo performance assessments. Robin (our lecturer in this class) will also look at:
- Developing performance startegies.
- Performance anxiety and developing confidence.
- Research
- Building up an exam programme.
- Stylistic techniques and research.
- Technical challenges and requirements.
- Building an effective practice/rehearsal schedules.
- Evaluting performances.
The class also has class discussions, viewing film of live performances and concerts and in depth evaluations of well known guitarists and bassists.
Every few weeks there will be a rolling programme of performances throughout the year. It will repeat every 5/6 weeks giving everyone the opportunity to play four times throughout the year and each performance will be assessed, apart from the first.
So this is the 4 performances I have to do:
1. In September I have to play a confidence piece, this is one that I am familiar with orhave played before.
2. In October I have to play a piece demonstrating research with challenging technical/musical features. I have to consult my guitar tutor for this piece.
3. In November/December I have to play a graded piece (Grade 7 or 8) and this performance will be filmed.
4. In February/March I have to play another piece of my own choice, again demonstrating research with challenging technical/musical features. And this performance will also be filmed.
WHAT I HOPE TO ACHIEVE:
In this class I am hoping to achieve much more confidence. It is my biggest fall back, all though I can perform in front of people fine but I struggle to just talk in front of them. So I want to be able to perform as a soloist showing confidence and technical competence. I also hope to gain some really helpful guitar techniques and be able to solo on the bass quite well.
